Avoniel bonfire lit at midnight amid cheers from large crowd

The Avoniel bonfire went up in flames at midnight in front of a large crowd.

A number of bonfire builders used everything from petrol to a blowtorch to set the pyre alight in the car park of an East Belfast leisure centre.

There was a huge cheer as flames engulfed the 25 pallet high bonfire adorned in tricolours.

The Eleventh Night fire came came just hours after Belfast City Council backed away from clearing the bonfire amid fears UVF elements could spark violence.

Minutes after it was lit, East Belfast Cultural Collective spokesman Robert Girvin told Belfast Live: "This was only ever about celebrating our culture, celebrating it not defending it. Hopefully next year we'll be allowed to do just that."
