Republic of Ireland fans can't believe Man United's Cristiano Ronaldo hasn't been sent off

It has been a dramatic few days for Cristiano Ronaldo after he re-signed for Manchester United from Juventus, just over a decade since initially leaving the club.

The 36-year-old, however, had to complete the paperwork on his £19.5m deal in Lisbon while on international duty with Portugal, as they prepared for a set of World Cup qualifiers.

The first of those is against Republic of Ireland and it's safe to say Ronaldo didn't put in his finest first-half performance.

He was denied a golden opportunity to break the record to become the leading international goalscorer of all time, as the forward saw a penalty saved by Manchester City goalkeeper Gavin Bazunu.

Before that, Ronaldo was also involved in a moment of controversy after he appeared to raise his hand in Darragh O'Shea's face, but nothing was given.

John Egan did, however, give Stephen Kenny's side the lead just before the interval with a terrific header.

This decision not to show the United forward a red card for the incident on O'Shea has fumed many Ireland supporters, who have vented their frustration on social media.

Here's what some of them had to say:

@rorymon : Ronaldo punched a player. Not only has he not been sent off but they have only showed one replay of it.

@MylesMcGarvey : Ronaldo should have been sent off before that.

@pmokane : Yes he totally overplayed it, but it doesn't matter. Ronaldo raised his hand and should have been sent off.

@Rickle_Pick86 : Can't understand why VAR didn't look at the Ronaldo punch?? He should have been sent off for that.

@FancyVegasPro : Not only should Ronaldo have been sent off, but it would have been absolutely hilarious if he was sent off. A travesty of comedy justice.
