Police force entry to arrest man in Mayfield police operation

Corona Street, Mayfield

A man has been arrested after police forced their way into a Mayfield home to arrest a man they claim threatened officers and barricaded himself in a room.

Police visited a Corona Street unit about 7.15am on July 19.

It is alleged a 38-year-old man unrelated to the police inquiry became threatening and "didn't want to come out".

Police dogs and multiple emergency vehicles including police and ambulance rescue trucks were called to the scene.

Police closed the street and urged people to avoid the area.

"I walked out this morning and saw all these police cars," a nearby resident said.

"We didn't hear anything, no alarm to know something was going on. As the morning developed we saw more emergency services arrive but they've been very quiet about what's happening."

Officers forced entry and the man was arrested at 11.15am. He was taken to Newcastle Police Station where he was "assisting police" with their inquiries on Wednesday afternoon.

Police said there were no reports of anyone being seriously injured.
