Avoid rounds, don't bring your card and top tips for money saving in Irish pubs and on nights out

Many people across the country are feeling the pinch before payday these days.

From rising energy bills to record petrol prices, the increased cost of living has left many short on cash when it comes to enjoying a night out with friends.

The price of a pint has also jumped by about 20c in a number of Irish pubs this year, creating another barrier to a night on the beer.

Here, we have compiled some money-saving tips to ensure you can still enjoy a night at the pub - without breaking the bank.

Avoid buying rounds

Don't join in buying rounds of drinks, especially if you are out with a large group of friends.

Set a budget

Decide on the amount of money that you are able to afford to spend before your night out and try to stick to it.

Take out cash

Leave your card at home and only use cash for the evening. It can be a great way of keeping track of your spending as it limits you to a specific amount.

Don’t buy a takeaway

Avoid the chipper after the pub where you will end up spending another €10. Have food ready for when you come home with the munchies.

Alternate drinks with water

The cost of pint after pint can add up so take a break every second round and drink a glass of water instead (it’s free!). Both your liver and your wallet will thank you the next morning.

Split the cost of a taxi home

Plan your journey home before you head out and ideally agree to share the cost of a taxi home. Even better, avoid taking a taxi at all if possible.
