Avicii’s family launch suicide prevention and mental health foundation in honour of late DJ

Avicii’s family have vowed to honour the superstar DJ by setting up a mental health foundation in his memory.

The Swedish musician, real name Tim Bergling, was found dead in Muscat on April 20 last year, with his family later confirming that he had died by suicide.

His family have now revealed that they will launch the Tim Bergling Foundation in a bid to support organisations working on mental health and suicide prevention campaigns.

It will also aid projects related to climate change, endangered species and other environmental causes.

A statement from the family read: "A year after his passing on April 20, 2018, the Tim "Avicii" Bergling family are starting a foundation –the Tim Bergling Foundation – in his memory.

"The foundation will be everlasting. It will initially focus on supporting people and organisations working in the field of mental illness and suicide prevention."

It concluded: "Other areas in which it will be active are climate change, development assistance, nature conservation and endangered species. The foundation's objectives may be pursued both in Sweden and abroad.

"Tim wanted to make a difference – starting a foundation in his name is our way to honour his memory and continue to act in his spirit."

Last year the family revealed that Bergling struggled to “find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most”.

The statement at the time, release to Variety, read: “Our beloved Tim was a seeker, a fragile artistic soul searching for answers to existential questions.

“An over-achieving perfectionist who travelled and worked hard at a pace that led to extreme stress.

“When he stopped touring, he wanted to find a balance in life to be happy and be able to do what he loved most – music.

“He really struggled with thoughts about Meaning, Life, Happiness. He could not go on any longer.”

The statement concluded: “He wanted to find peace. Tim was not made for the business machine he found himself in; he was a sensitive guy who loved his fans but shunned the spotlight.

“Tim, you will forever be loved and sadly missed. The person you were and your music will keep your memory alive. We love you, Your family.”

Last year reports surfaced that a posthumous album of the DJ’s unreleased music had supposedly been given the green light to go ahead and was expecting to release at the end of the year, according to Swedish publication Aftonbladet.

However, no music has subsequently been released.
