Aves stun hapless Sporting to win Portuguese Cup

LISBON (Reuters) - Desportivo Aves pulled off one of the greatest-ever Portuguese Cup final upsets on Sunday when they beat runaway favourites Sporting 2-1 to win their first major trophy.

The defeat concluded an unhappy week for Sporting after around 50 hooded supporters burst into the club's training camp on Tuesday, injured striker Bas Dost and vandalised the dressing-room.

Furious Sporting fans turned their backs on the match and walked out after Aves' second goal and some were seen to clash with police.

Alexandre Guedes scored both goals for Aves who narrowly avoided relegation this season -- the first time they have ever managed to survive in the top-flight for more than one season at a time.

Guedes put Aves ahead after 16 minutes with a diving header at the far post and stunned Sporting again in the 72nd minute as he burst down the left, cut inside a defender and fired his shot into the far corner.

Fredy Montero pulled one back for Sporting, who were repeatedly foiled by Aves' 42-year-old goalkeeper Quim.
