Average of 766,300 people tune into Ireland's World Cup quarter-final defeat

A peak audience of 816,200 tuned into watch Ireland's World Cup quarter-final humiliation at the hands of New Zealand on Saturday.

An average of 766,300 were watching as Joe Schmidt's side crashed out of the competition, with the peak coming later in the game at 12.59 pm.

73 percent of those watching TV at the time were tuned into RTE Two's coverage of the game.

The figure is considerably lower than comparisons from 2018 when a peak of some 1.328 million people saw Ireland win the Grand Slam on St. Patrick's Day.

Ireland's historic win over the All Blacks last year also clocks in ahead of the weekend's game - with the November clash attracting 1.035 million viewers towards the end of that victory.

A whopping average of 975,600 enjoying the win over England and 883,700 watched the New Zealand win - both averages come in comfortably above the peak audience of Saturday's clash.

The game, played in Tokyo, got underway at 11.15 AM as Ireland's disappointing campaign came to an end.

Joe Schmidt now steps away from the Ireland setup after over six years in charge, winning three Six Nations Championships and guiding the side to two World Cup quarter-finals.
