Avengers: Endgame: Why Katherine Langford's mysterious character was cut from the final film

WARNING: Spoilers for Avengers: Endgame

The directors of Avengers: Endgame have revealed why Katherine Langford never appeared in the final cut of the film, despite the fact she was cast as a mysterious unnamed character last year

Anthony and Joe Russo told MTV’s Happy Sad Confused podcast that Langford was meant to play the adult version of Morgan Stark, the daughter of Tony (Robert Downey Jr).

She would have appeared in a scene that mirrored the sequence in Avengers: Infinity War in which Thanos (Joe Brolin) saw a vision of a young Gamora after he used the Infinity Gauntlet to cause the snap.

As Joe Russo explained: “There was an idea that Tony was going to go into the metaphysical way station that Thanos goes in when he snapped his fingers, and there was going to be a future version of his daughter in that way station.”

The older Morgan would have forgiven Tony for sacrificing himself and leaving his family behind, allowing him a sense of peace before his death.

He added: “We showed it to a test audience and it was really confusing for them.”

Anthony Russo said that, because there was no real ”emotional association” with the older Morgan, the pair eventually decided to cut the moment. “It was just too many ideas in an overcomplicated movie,” Joe said.

The aftermath of Tony’s death is being teased as a major theme in the next film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Spider-Man: Far From Home

A new trailer also suggests that the film will see Peter Parker (Tom Holland) take centre stage as one of the MCU’s biggest figures in the future.

“The world needs the next Iron Man,” Peter is heard saying in the trailer.
