Avengers Endgame spoilers: Captain America end known from "very first outline"

Warning: spoilers for Avengers Endgame.

One of the characters to reach the conclusion of his Marvel Cinematic Universe arc in Avengers: Endgame was Captain America aka Steve Rogers ( Chris Evans ).

Compared to how another Avenger went out, it appears that Steve was deemed worthy of getting a happy ending and now screenwriters Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely have revealed why.

Speaking to The New York Times , the writers confirmed that it was always going to be the case that Steve was reunited with his beloved Peggy Carter ( Hayley Atwell ) in Endgame.

McFeely revealed: "From the very first outline, we knew he was going to get his dance."

This, of course, refers to the dance that the pair of lovers organised to have before being separated for decades at the end of Captain America: The First Avenger.

McFeely added why this was the case that the pair had to have their happy ending.

"On a separate subject, I started to lose my barometer on what was just fan service and what was good for the character. Because I think it’s good for the characters.

"But we also just gave you what you wanted. Is that good? I don’t know. But I’ll tell you, it’s satisfying. He’s postponed a life in order to fulfill his duty.

"That’s why I didn’t think we were ever going to kill him. Because that’s not the arc. The arc is, I finally get to put my shield down because I’ve earned that."

And quite right too!

Markus added why Steve's ending felt earned as giving up what he loved was so vital to his character.

"A hero without sacrifice, you’re not going to get the miles out of that person that you need to for these movies. That’s what makes them a hero, it’s not the powers."

We couldn't agree more!

Avengers Endgame is in cinemas now.
