Avengers: Endgame directors thank 'greatest fans in world' as film breaks box office record

Avengers: Endgame has officially trounced Avatar to become the most successful film of all time.

Just last weekend, the Marvel sequel grossed a further $2.8m at the global box office, bringing the film’s worldwide total to a gargantuan $2.78 billion.

As of writing, the film’s worldwide haul sits at $2,789.2 billion, which surpasses the $2.788 billion grossed by Avatar in December 2009.

Endgame’s gross has no doubt been aided by the recent release of Spider-Man: Far from Home, which directly follows up on lingering plot threads teased by Endgame, as well as Endgame’s recent re-release at the end of June.

Unveiled in selected cinemas across the US, the re-released version featured a deleted scene and a new introduction from director Anthony Russo.

Speaking at the Marvel panel at San Diego Comic-Con – where 10 new films were announced as part of the MCU Phase Four slate – studio boss Kevin Feige said: “Thanks to you, Avengers: Endgame is the biggest film of all time.”

The film’s directors, Anthony and Joe Russo, addressed the news on Twitter, thanking “the greatest fans in the universe”.

In May, James Cameron congratulated the Endgame team for outgrossing his 1997 epic Titanic, which was previously the second most successful film of all time. “An iceberg sank the real Titanic,” he wrote in a tweet. “It took the Avengers to sink my Titanic. Everyone here at Lightstorm Entertainment salutes your amazing achievement. You’ve shown that the movie industry is not only alive and well, it’s bigger than ever!”

Among Marvel’s new slate of films are The Eternals, starring Angelina Jolie, Thor sequel, Love and Thunder, in which Natalie Portman will become a female version of the superhero and a Blade reboot starring Oscar-winner Mahershala Ali.
