The forthcoming Black Widow spin-off movie prevented a funeral scene for Scarlett Johansson’s character in Avengers: Endgame, the film’s directors have confirmed.
Speaking during the DVD/Blu-Ray commentary for the Marvel finale movie, co-director Joe Russo said that there was a reason the death of Robert Downey Jr’s character Tony Stark received far more attention in the film than that of Black Widow.
“People have asked why Natasha didn’t get the same amount of screen time post-death as Tony did,” he said. “Well, Tony does not have another movie. Tony is done. And Natasha has another film. And Marvel Universe obviously does not have to move forward linearly anymore. But that character still has more screen time coming.”
Avengers: Endgame saw Black Widow sacrifice her life in order to earn the Soul Stone, which allowed the Avengers to change the course of history and rescue half of humanity. Unlike Tony Stark, however, she did not receive a significant amount of mourning from her friends and allies.
Johansson will lead her own spin-off movie next year, however, which is speculated to be a prequel film. Rachel Weisz, Florence Pugh and Ray Winstone will also appear in the movie, which is to be released on 1 May 2020.
