Thor is reportedly going to be donning a brand-new costume for Avengers: Doomsday.
Chris Hemsworth’s workout regime is honestly an act of wonder. The man commits to his physique with the same level of dedication Daniel Day-Lewis brings to mastering a character’s voice, body, and gait. But appreciation for this kind of action movie prep — especially in the world of comic book films — is still far less prestigious, and often less recognized. But now that Hemsworth’s trainer has gone public with the details of his regimen, that might finally change.
In an interview with The Independent, Hemsworth’s longtime trainer Luke Zocchi revealed a wild tidbit: during filming for Thor: Love and Thunder, Hemsworth was eating 450-calorie meals ten times a day, alongside intense training. But that was for Love and Thunder — which, if you still haven’t seen, maybe don’t. The movie was probably one of the first indicators that all might not be well at Marvel.
Thankfully, Marvel now seems focused on fixing the empire. That means (hopefully) better movies — like Avengers: Doomsday. Hemsworth is confirmed to return as Thor, possibly for his long-awaited swan song. And for the role, according to Zocchi, Thor will wear a brand-new costume designed to emphasize his arms and shoulders.
His arms were on display in the last film, but the cape and ornate regalia sort of distracted from his actual physique. Ironically, that was when Hemsworth and Zocchi reportedly pushed themselves harder than ever. In fact, Hemsworth got so big that he eventually became uncomfortable with his size — and this time around, he’s aiming to tone down.
Age, too, has reportedly caught up with them. They’re now more focused, more refined, zeroing in on what will look best with this new (still unrevealed) costume. The last time there was this much secrecy around Thor’s look was for Infinity War — still widely regarded as the character’s best arc and costume to date. If Doomsday really is the final time we see the God of Thunder, then it only feels right that he goes out in something that tops that.
The construction mesh is still up around the MCU. The studio’s taken a hit, and is now making small but crucial adjustments in hopes of climbing back to the top — just as James Gunn’s new DCU threatens to dethrone them with Superman.
This summer will be telling, especially with Marvel’s big, splashy Pedro Pascal-led Fantastic Four: The First Steps set to debut. Betting against Marvel figuring out how to pack theaters again would still be foolish — but the shift is noticeable. Hemsworth is reportedly slowing down in the gym, and newer stars like Pascal are being prioritized. It feels like we’re witnessing the end of an era.
Avengers: Endgame already brought plenty of tears — maybe a little less so now that Robert Downey Jr. is back — but Thor waving goodbye will be the final nail in the coffin of the MCU’s golden age.
Avengers: Doomsday has been pushed back to 2026, and is now expected to debut during the crowded December season.
