Avengers: Doomsday live event coverage – all the details from the "surprise" announcement, as it happened

The Russo brothers teased a big Avengers: Doomsday "surprise" on social media and set the Marvel fanbase alight. However, after a whole lot of anticipation, it turns out that we're not getting a new trailer for the upcoming Marvel Phase 6 movie. Instead, it was a pop-up coffee shop teasing Doctor Doom's backstory.

There were several Easter eggs to unpick at the installation, including some teases about what parts of comic book lore that the movie will likely weave in. There was also a newly revealed look at the Latverian flag too. Read on to find out about all of these teases.

GamesRadar+ was at the event too, which saw the Russo brothers make an appearance to interact with fans and sign autographs. As you might imagine, reaction to the teased "surprise" has been pretty mixed, with many MCU fans upset that we still don't have a full Avengers: Doomsday trailer.

However, it seems we'll just have to wait and see what happens with that. After all, there's always the potential it arrives with the release of Spider-Man: Brand New Day at the end of July or during Marvel's return to Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con.

For what did happen, check out our breakdown below of everything revealed at the Avengers: Doomsday event.

So what's all the fuss about? Yesterday (June 1), Avengers: Doomsday directors Joe Russo and Anthony Russo shared a mysterious post on social media. After posting several images teasing a logo, they shared the full Doomsday logo alongside a caption teasing a location.

This read: "#DomLatveria 4b Holywell Ln. London. EC2A 3ET. Starts June 2nd at 10am BST. Surprise at 2pm BST." Check the post out below.

Now, there's obviously not a huge amount to go on just yet. The hashtag "DomLatveria" is in reference to Doctor Doom's fictional dominion in the Marvel comics, which we could be getting a sneak peek at. Meanwhile, the actual address takes you to a coffee shop in Shoreditch, Flying Horse Coffee.

The event is also part of SXSW London, which is the UK branch of the culture festival, which takes place in East London. The Russo brothers are doing two talks at the festival, but it's not clear if these will be linked to this announcement at all.

It's all very intriguing… Now it's past 10am BST too, hopefully we'll soon have a bit more of an idea about what's actually in store.

While we wait for any updates out of the Avengers: Doomsday event, let's recap what we know so far about the movie. First announced at San Diego Comic-Con back in 2024, Iron Man star Robert Downey Jr. was unveiled as Marvel supervillain Doctor Doom as the Russos confirmed he'll be the focus of their new Avengers movie.

In the years since, the cast has expanded beyond Downey Jr. to include several other major MCU stars returning. Chris Hemsworth is back as Thor, Chris Evans is returning as Steve Rogers, and a whole load of X-Men stars will be making their MCU debut.

As is expected with a huge superhero ensemble movie too, we'll also be seeing several of the current Marvel stars appearing in the film as well. This includes the cast of Fantastic Four, Thunderbolts, Black Panther, and current Captain America, Anthony Mackie.

What we don't have at the moment are any official plot details. So if we're going to get a trailer today, hopefully we'll get more of an idea about the Russos have planned for the hugely anticipated Marvel movie. Watch this space...

The first images doing the rounds online out of the Avengers: Doomsday event appears to show a custom coffee themed around Doctor Doom. Shared by Comic Book Resources, attendees can buy a Dom Latveria coffee, inspired by Doom's homeland. Labelled as "the official coffee of world domination", it is created by "those who serve" and "approved by the ministry of morale".

As well as the coffee bag, there's a series of themed items on the menu that are full of Easter eggs. These include "Cynthia's Blend," in reference Doom's mother, and Fortunov, who is seemingly the person that Doom took the throne from.

Another fan who attended the event also shared an Instagram showing at board at the coffee shop, which reads, "Richards was wrong". This is a reference to Reed Richards (played by Pedro Pascal), but what could it mean? Check out the video from Cinemakaination below.

"Richards was wrong," is a very intriguing tease ahead of the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. The only glimpse that we've had of Robert Downey Jr. in character so far came at the very end of The Fantastic Four: First Steps. He appeared in the movie's post-credits scene, which took place four years after the main events of that movie.

He can be seen speaking to Franklin Richards, who holds the Power Cosmic. In Fantastic Four, the team is given the impossible choice of whether they should sacrifice the young boy to Galactus or give up all of Earth to him. Reed Richards comes up with another option – use an experimental bridge device to send Galactus to the furthest reaches of space after luring him to New York City with Franklin as bait.

Franklin is saved, but it's clear he is extremely powerful. We watched him bring Sue Storm back to life and there's no doubt that a power like that will be extremely desirable to those wanting world domination, like Doctor Doom.

So what was Richards wrong about? Was it saving young Franklin and keeping his power source alive? Or could it be something to do with Richards' understanding of the multiverse – and the potential incursions caused from all of the multiverse travel in Phases 5 and 6 so far?

The coffee pop-up in London references Latveria, but what exactly is the location? Latveria is a fictional country in Eastern Europe ruled by Victor von Doom. We've only had one reference to it in the MCU so far, during The Fantastic Four: First Steps.

A sign for the country appears in Earth-828 during the formation of the Future Foundation. However, Doom doesn't appear during this sequence as his seat at the table remains empty.

There was another tease for the location hidden in a post from Doomsday composer Alan Silvestri on Instagram. This showed the location as 'Int. Armor Room. Doomstadt.' Doomstadt is Latveria's capital, so we will definitely be seeing it at some point in Doomsday.

In the comics, Lateveria has a long, storied history. The country had been ruled by the Fortunov family for many centuries before Doom overthrew them and became their absolute leader. His quest for power was fuelled somewhat by the death of his parents, Werner von Doom and Cynthia, whose deaths were both caused by the reign of the monarchy.

Interestingly on the menu of the coffee pop-up are two references to this with "Cynthia's Blend" and "Fortunov" both options for purchase. It seems very possible then that we'll learn more about Doom's backstory in Avengers: Doomsday.

Let's take a closer look at that coffee menu too, as it contains several different Easter eggs. As well as the nod to Doom's mother and the Fortunov family, another Twitter user has shared some other Easter eggs that you might have missed.

One option offered is "The Rapprochement", which is a Latverian holiday while another is "Zefiro," which is the clan that Doom belongs to in the Marvel comics. Finally there's something on the menu called "Hassenstadt Dark". Hassenstadt is the original name for Doomstadt, which we know is the capital of Latveria.

Interestingly, one attendee of the pop-up has also noticed a slight redesign for Doctor Doom's flag. In The Fantastic Four: First Steps, the green and red flag seems to have a yellow logo in the middle of it. Meanwhile at the pop-up café, the flag instead as the new Doctor Doom logo in the same spot. It's not clear why this has changed, but it is possible that the Fantastic Four version was the earlier flag, before Victor Von Doom took over the country.

Fans have been reacting to the Avengers: Doomsday event so far, and it seems like opinion is pretty split. Some have been loving the dedication from the marketing team for the Marvel movie, saying that it's really adding to their excitement for the upcoming film. However, others have been left wondering whether this is the only announcement we're going to get from the event, especially after so many had predicted a trailer.

"Doom’s marketing is already ruling the multiverse," wrote one. "'Dom Latveria Coffee… Richards was wrong' is such a perfect, petty pop-up. One sip of that Latverian dark roast and you’ll be monologuing about inferior science while wearing a green cloak."

"'Richards was wrong' on a coffee cup is the most Doctor Doom marketing ever," added another, while a third wrote: "'Richards was wrong' Doctor Doom's marketing team is working harder than most of the avengers at this point."

Meanwhile another wondered, "Is this..the surprise..?" as others shared their concerns too, including one fan writing: "Damn this is underwhelming."

We're now less than an hour away from the "surprise" announcement that the Russos promised. At the moment, it's not yet clear whether this will be an in-person surprise or something that will be available to fans around the world.

There's still a lot of speculation that a trailer may be imminent for the film. This is especially the case after some Marvel sleuths online thought they spotted some hidden videos on various Marvel YouTube channels.

As we get close to 2pm (BST), we're expecting to get more of an idea about what's coming. GamesRadar+ will be at the café ahead of this too, so we'll let you know as soon as we learn more.

We're now less than 30 minutes out from the big reveal. If it is a trailer, this will be the first major look at the upcoming Marvel movie. There have been four teaser trailers so far, which have introduced major characters set to appear in the new movie.

In the first, it was revealed that Chris Evans was returning as Steve Rogers as he was seen cradling a newborn baby. A second featured Chris Hemsworth back as Thor as he prayed to his late father Odin for guidance for one last battle.

The third teaser featured the X-Men with Professor X and Magneto playing a game of chess in the X-Mansion before Cyclops dropped to his knees and unleashed his powers. The final teaser saw the Fantastic Four team arrived in the MCU, landing close to Wakanda and meeting Shuri.

The mystery about what the "surprise" is at the location shared by the Russos has deepened as a queue has formed at the coffee shop that has the Doctor Doom pop-up. Our man on the ground, Jordan Farley, is in the queue and he says there are about 50 people waiting, but it's not yet clear what they're waiting for...

It's past 2pm now in the UK and nothing much has happened yet... No trailer announcement and no news from the location that the Russos shared either. We're waiting with bated breath, just like all of you so as soon as anything happens, we'll share it here.

In the meantime, here's an update from the queue...

The Russo brothers have now arrived at Flying Horse Coffee in Shoreditch ahead of the announcement!

Those waiting in the queue are now slowly being let inside the coffee shop and they're handing out signed copies of the Doctor Doom special menus and signed packets of coffee. It's not clear yet whether this was the "surprise" that the directors had been teasing, or whether that's still to come.

Well, it seems like that's it from the Avengers: Doomsday surprise. The Russo brothers held a meet-and-greet with fans inside the coffee shop, where they signed autographs. They also handed out Latveria flags, which you can get a closer look at below.

Unfortunately, it doesn't seem like a trailer will be released today. There had been some hopes from fans that this is what the teased "surprise" was but there has been no update from Marvel Entertainment yet.

The Russos have now left the event so it seems like that's drawn proceedings to a close.

Marvel fans were understandably left pretty disappointed by the lack of trailer for Avengers: Doomsday. Several have been posting on Twitter about the "surprise", sharing their thoughts about the news not being anything more exciting than that.

"No idea how history will remember the Avengers Doomsday hype cycle, but this might be the greatest rage-bait promotion of all time," wrote one.

Another fan wrote: "There’s just no way Russos said so much about Avengers Doomsday '2pm' for it to be a coffee shop that got revealed BEFORE 2pm. No way."

A third added: "No Avengers: Doomsday Trailer Today. Russo Brothers ragebaited the whole Marvel fandom for just a coffee and a Flag which already got leaked before surprise reveal loll."
