The Avengers: Endgame directors have revealed that one of the characters in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is gay.
Anthony and Joe Russo appeared on EW Morning Live to discuss the superhero blockbuster in which the latter briefly cameos during a therapy sessions scene with Steve Rogers (Chris Evans). His character talks about going on a date with a man for the first time since Thanos wiped out half of all humanity.
Joe described the scene as “integral to show how the world was reacting to what happened in at the end of Infinity War. However, when he was asked whether the character was the first gay character in the MCU, he added: “Yes, openly gay.”
Russo continued: “There’ve been insinuations about other characters’ sexuality, but this is the first openly gay character.”
When asked which character, he said: “We’re gonna find out. “There is a gay character coming up in one of their films, and I think [Marvel president] Kevin [Feige] will make that announcement, I’m sure pretty soon.”
Avengers: Endgame recently surpassed Titanic to become the second highest-grossing film of all time. It looks set to topple Avatar from the top spot in a matter of weeks.
Earlier this week, Chris Evans released a star-studded behind-the-scenes set video taken in between takes of the film’s climactic battle.
