Avengers directors Anthony and Joe Russo react to criticism on lack of diversity in Marvel films

Avengers directors brothersJoe Russo and Anthony Russo have reacted to actor Anthony Mackie’s criticism of Marvel films when it comes to the issue of diversity.

The Russo siblings were asked about Mackie’s remarks in a recent interview with MovieMaker.

Mackie, who portrays Sam Wilson/Falcon in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, reflected on diversity in the franchise in a June interview with Variety.

He notably said in reference to Black Panther: “If you only can hire the Black people for the Black movie, are you saying they’re not good enough when you have a mostly white cast?”

The Russo brothers supported Mackie’s comments, highlighting the need for diversity and inclusion across the movie industry.

“I think we can always all do better at diversity, constantly in this business, and in every facet of every industry, so he’s not wrong at all,” Joe Russo said.

“I think that we all have to work harder to keep endorsing and supporting diversity on both sides of the camera.”

Anthony Russo added: “We have a ton of respect for Anthony Mackie.

“He is not only an amazing actor, but he’s an amazing person, and we’ve loved our collaboration with him.

“He’s a very smart guy.”

The Independent has contacted Marvel and Disney for comment.
