As might have been expected, Avengers 4 is shaping up to be the longest film of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
During a live-streamed Q&A (via The Hollywood Reporter), director Joe Russo said: “The running time on Avengers 4 is currently sitting right at three hours. We’ll see if that holds.”
It is likely some scenes will end up hitting the cutting room floor before the film hits theatres, as Russo added they were currently halfway through the editing process.
Then again, Avengers: Infinity War already stands as the longest MCU film at two hours, forty minutes – an extra twenty minutes doesn’t seem entirely unreasonable for a film intended to be the most important chapter in the franchise yet.
Russo added: “We’re really just scratching the surface on our VFX shots. There are more than 3,000 VFX shots in the movie; those require a lot of time and thought and energy and effort, and we’re very early in the phase of getting VFX done. We’ve just started work with Alan Silvestri on the score.”
An official synopsis for the film reads: “A culmination of 22 interconnected films the fourth instalment of the Avengers saga will draw audiences to witness the turning point of this epic journey. Our beloved heroes will truly understand how fragile this reality is and the sacrifices that must be made to uphold it.”
