"Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game" officially launched this week, and developer The Gameplay Group has already laid out its post-launch plans just one day later.
Alongside a detailed roadmap of upcoming features, the studio surprised fans with the reveal of a new playable character coming to the game completely for free, separate from the previously announced Season Pass.
'Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game' Is Adding a New Character For Free
According to the latest post by the game's official account on X, the new character is Tagah, a figure from the upcoming "Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender" film, and he was not included in the previously revealed Season Pass lineup at all.
The Gameplay Group confirmed that Tagah will be available to all players at no cost as a thank you for their support, with additional details on his moveset and release to follow ahead of her planned Fall 2026 launch.
The reveal itself caught the community off guard, since most players had been tracking only the five-character Season Pass announced at EVO 2026 earlier this year. That pass confirmed Bolin, Chief Lin Beifong, Ty Lee, and Uncle Iroh, with the fifth and final slot still undecided.
Fans will vote to determine the last addition from a list of candidates including Amon, Kuvira, King Bumi, Tenzin, and Asami Sato. Tagah stands entirely outside that structure, making him a genuine bonus addition.
Our 12 character roster has expanded as a mysterious fighter awaits. Tagah from Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender will be joining the roster for FREE later this year! More details to come and thank you to all our fans! pic.twitter.com/xcWp3SoPXl

'Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game' Post-Launch Roadmap
Beyond the new character reveal, The Gameplay Group outlined a wider roadmap of features and improvements coming to the game in the weeks and months ahead, said GameRant.
A Ranked Season is confirmed to be launching soon, which will introduce Ranked and Spectator modes for online play. Casual modes are also on the way alongside Combo Trials, Tutorials, and a Beginner's Zone designed to help newcomers get comfortable with the game's mechanics.

Premium and pre-order content is also coming soon for players who purchased those editions, with the studio noting that sprite and animation improvements are planned specifically for Ozai, Nightmare Korra, and Avatar Aang. Those characters had been flagged by some players as needing visual polish, so the planned updates address community feedback directly.
The roadmap also acknowledges that the Nintendo Switch version launched in a more limited state, missing language localization outside of English and crossplay support. Based on the wording of the post, those features are expected to be added later, though no specific timeframe was given.
What to Expect From the Fighting Game?
"Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game" launched to a broadly positive reception, earning an 81 out of 100 on OpenCritic with 70 percent of critics recommending it. The game has drawn particular praise for its faithful hand-drawn 2D animation, which closely mirrors the visual style of the original animated series, and for its tight and responsive controls.
It is available on PC, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Nintendo Switch 2, with the Xbox version delayed to September following a last-minute setback tied to a backend feature the team was unable to resolve in time for the original launch window.
"Avatar Legends: The Fighting Game" supports both online and local multiplayer with full cross-play across platforms. With the roadmap now laid out and a free character already confirmed, The Gameplay Group is signaling that this is far from a set-and-forget release, with meaningful content on the way for the community well beyond launch.
