Avalanche warning issued to Scots after Storm Barra batters country

An avalanche warning has been issued to Scots after Storm Barra brought blizzard conditions to parts of the country.

Cairngorm Mountain Rescue Team took to social media to warn of a 'high category four' avalanche risk.

The Scottish Avalanch Information Service (SAIS) issued the alert for Northern Cairngorms.

The warning is currently in place from 6pm on Tuesday, December 7, to 6pm on Wednesday, December 8.

According to SAIS avalanche forecasters, the area has 'deep accumulations of unstable windslab' making it a high-risk avalanche hazard.

They add that 'steep wind-sheltered terrain' will be particularly vulnerable to avalanches.

It comes after drivers were forced to turn back due to blizzard conditions on the A82 in Glencoe.

Footage shared by one passenger, Shannon Graham, showed the hair-raising weather as snow lashed down.

She had been en route to Edinburgh from Fort William to visit the Christmas Markets with her partner when they were forced to cut their journey short.

The disruption has continued into Wednesday, with flooding wreaking havoc in parts of the country.

Five flood alerts remain in place, with three more serious flood warnings concentrated in the northeast.

The storm, which reached huge gusts up to 69 mph in Scotland, has also brought on power outages.

Energy supplier SSEN is reporting power outages with the most cuts - 26 at present - clustered in the northeast.

Other outages include two in Dundee, four on the west coast and islands in Inverness, Colonsay and Coll.
