A large gingko tree that has started to display golden-yellow leaves is attracting visitors drawn to the superb autumnal view on the grounds of the former Hinokami Elementary School in Nichinan, Tottori Prefecture. The school was closed 11 years ago because of the declining population in nearby areas.
The 100-year-old, 18-meter-tall tree -- surrounded with a golden carpet of fallen leaves and accentuated with a lone wooden bench -- is renowned for its Instagrammable appeal. More than 1,000 people are estimated to visit the site on holidays.
There was said to be a couple who visited the site from abroad last year to take their wedding photo there before their ceremony. A concert will be held on the grounds on Sunday.
