Autumn Budget 2021: Success for Stoke-on-Trent as Chancellor makes £56m commitment to the city

Chancellor Rishi Sunak made a £56 million commitment to Stoke-on-Trent in his 2021 Autumn Budget.

Mr Sunak confirmed that three out of the city's four Levelling Up bids have been successful when he delivered his speech to Parliament this afternoon.

The news comes days after Stoke-on-Trent's three MPs, the city council, the Staffordshire and Stoke-on-Trent LEP and the Staffordshire Chambers of Commerce wrote a joint letter to the Chancellor urging him to back the £73.5m worth of transport and regeneration bids which have been developed by the city.

During his address, Mr Sunak said: "I'm allocating the first round of bids from the Levelling Up Fund....£1.7bn to invest in the infrastructure of everyday life in over 100 local areas.

"With £170m in Scotland, £120m in Wales, and £50m in Northern Ireland...this will benefit the whole United Kingdom.

"We're backing projects in Aberdeen, Bury, Burnley, Lewes, Clwyd South and not one, not two, but three successful projects for the great city of Stoke-on-Trent."

The successful bids include £16 million for The Goods Yard redevelopment, £20 million towards the City Centre Regeneration Area - which will include new homes, a hotel and a 2,500-seater indoor venue - and £20 million for the regeneration of three heritage sites in the city.

Stoke-on-Trent City Council leader Abi Brown and Stoke-on-Trent Central MP Jo Gideon took to Twitter to share their excitement.

While Dan Jellyman, cabinet member for regeneration at Stoke-on-Trent City Council, also welcomed the Chancellor's announcement.

He told StokeonTrentLive: "This is everything we could have hoped for and more. It is the biggest amount of government investment in this city in the last 50 years.

"It's a huge boost for Stoke-on-Trent and shows that the government recognises that we are a great city. We've always said that Stoke-on-Trent is the litmus test for the levelling up agenda."
