It was a new era for the championship, as ‘ground-effect’ floors were banned leading to an intense battle between turbo-charged engines and the naturally-aspirated Cosworth V8s.
The 1983 season also featured a battle between Nelson Piquet and Alain Prost, with the Brazilian ultimately claiming his second crown at the final round in South Africa.
Piquet won the title for Brabham, the squad’s final crown, and it marked the first time a turbo-powered car had clinched the F1 championship.
