Autopsy: 'Ink Master' tattoo artist died of heroin overdose

Dec. 04--An autopsy has determined that Scott Marshall, a tattoo artist and a winner of the "Ink Master" reality show, died of a heroin overdose, according to DuPage County Chief Deputy Coroner Charlie Dastych.

Marshall, 41, was found dead Oct. 25 at the Holiday Inn Express, 1490 W. Lake St., in Roselle, according to police. Marshall's wife, Johanna, told TMZ that Marshall got the hotel room because he wasn't feeling well enough to drive from his job at the Roselle Tattoo Co. to their home in Plainfield.

The cause of death was intoxication from heroin and benzodiazepine, which can be used to relax muscles, Dastych said. The coroner's office submitted its findings to Roselle police late last month, he said.

Roselle Deputy Chief Roman Tarchala said police are still working on the case.

Tribune calls to Marshall's family were not returned. A man who answered the phone at Roselle Tattoo on Thursday said shop employees were not speaking to the media.

Marshall beat out 16 tattoo artists on Season 4 of Spike TV's "Ink Master" in 2014 to win $100,000 and a feature in Inked magazine.

"Everybody the last three years told me I should try out for the show," Marshall told the Tribune last year. "I was like most tattoo artists who say, 'I'll never go on those tattoo shows, blah, blah, blah.' People say these things because they're not pushing themselves or don't have the opportunity.

"I looked inward and said if I had the chance to do that, I think it would be great to compete on that level. It got to the point where I felt like it was my destiny to win it from the time I went on my first casting call (in Detroit) until I won it."
