Feb. 24--The death of a 47-year-old woman in November has been determined to be cold-related, pushing the number of such deaths to 22 this season, officials said.
Juanita Kitchen, of the 7800 block of South Essex Avenue, was pronounced dead at 4:32 a.m. Nov. 28, 2014, at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, according to the Cook County medical examiner's office.
The woman was found on the 500 block of North Michigan Avenue at a bus stop, according to the office.
An autopsy determined that she died of arteriosclerotic cardiovascular disease, and a secondary cause was determined to be hypothermia due to cold exposure. Her death was ruled an accident.
Prior to Kitchen's autopsy results, another 2014 case was found to be the season's 21st cold-related death, according to the office. John Smith, 26, of the 7100 block of South Yates Avenue in Chicago, was pronounced dead at 5:12 p.m. Nov. 19, 2014, according to the office.
Smith was found on the 5500 block of West 175th Street in Tinley Park, according to the office.
An autopsy determined that he died of hypothermia due to cold exposure. A secondary cause was hypertensive cardiovascular disease. His death was ruled an accident.
Last winter -- during which Chicago had record-breaking low temperatures -- 32 cold-related deaths were counted in Cook County from Oct. 24, 2013, through April 3, 2014, officials said.
