Autonomy keen to stay in the elite

Autonomy, the software group founded by Dr Mike Lynch, is having a good day so far, up 16p to £10.58.

The company was confirmed this week as one of the new entrants to the FTSE 100, and analysts said the company would be keen to make sure it did not drop straight out again - its last stint in 2001 lasted just five months.

George O'Connor at Panmure Gordon commented: "In the dark dotcom days Autonomy spent a quarter in the top companies club and in our view will be keen to ensure that it does not repeat that.

"As a consequence investors should brace themselves for an earnings upgrade or (less likely) an acquisition, this side of Christmas. As Autonomy appreciates it is not the getting in that's the hard part but staying in."
