Son charged with murdering ex-Jets DL Barry Bennett, wife

Former Jets defensive lineman Barry Bennett and his wife were found dead in their Minnesota home on Wednesday, and authorities are seeking their son, who has been charged with second-degree murder.

Bennett, 63, and his wife, Carol, were found dead “under suspicious circumstances,” according to Todd County Sheriff Steve Och after a friend called the police to report that the couple had returned phone calls or text messages from the previous day. According to authorities, Carol Bennett was shot multiple times in the back and torso, while her husband was shot multiple times in the back of the head and torso.

Upon further investigation, Dylan John Bennett, 22, was identified as a suspect in the case and has since been charged with two counts of second-degree murder. Och did not identify Bennett’s relationship to the couple, but neighbors confirmed that he is indeed their youngest son, according to the New York Post. Investigators fear Bennett has left Minnesota and was headed to Mexico.

“According to the criminal complaint, Barry Bennett told the Todd County Sheriff’s Office in December that Dylan had expressed thoughts about killing his parents while he was in a mental health treatment facility,” ESPN reported.

A third-round pick of the New Orleans Saints out of Concordia College in 1978, Barry Bennett spent 11 seasons in the NFL, six of which came with the Jets.
