Authorities in remote Queensland on alert after NT COVID-19 lockdowns

Authorities in the remote Queensland community of Doomadgee are on alert after a COVID-19 case sent the Northern Territory town of Robinson River into lockdown.

Robinson River is just over four hours away from the Aboriginal Shire of Doomadgee.

"It's known that those two communities are culturally connected and people often travel between the towns," said Mount Isa Disaster Management Support Officer Senior Sergeant Jeffrey Magnus.

In Doomadgee, just 38 per cent of residents are fully vaccinated while 56 per cent have had their first dose.

"This is a really good opportunity to send the message to start wearing masks in those communities, even though there's no mandate."

Police are stationed at Hells Gate, between the two towns, turning away travellers from Robinson River.

"We're intercepting traffic and making sure they're not from the hotspot. There's no mandate to stop other travellers coming in," Senior Sergeant Magnus said.

"We're waiting on more information from Queensland Health."
