Authorities: 2 men shot during Chicago Heights weapons investigation

July 29--Authorities said they were continuing to investigate a Chicago Heights incident in which two men were shot by law enforcement officers during a weapons investigation Monday evening.

Joseph Fitzpatrick, the spokesperson for the U.S. attorney's office in Chicago, said no charges have been filed against the two men and a third man who is in custody. One of the men remains hospitalized with a non-life threatening gunshot wound, according a federal spokesman.

The trio was arrested following the shooting, which took place around 5 p.m. near the Western Avenue and Lincoln Highway intersection

According to authorities, Chicago police and agents of the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms were involved in an investigation in Chicago Heights when one of the suspects drew a weapon and threatened officers.

Officers fired and two of the men were struck in the lower body or legs, ATF Chicago spokesman Tom Ahern said. The men were taken to Advocate Christ Medical Center in Oak Lawn, and Ahern said Tuesday that one of the men is still hospitalized, but is expected to be released within the next few days.

Police say they recovered a weapon at the scene.

Both Fitzpatrick and Ahern said they could not divulge additional details because of the ongoing investigation.
