Austrian Grand Prix: Lewis Hamilton handed three-place grid penalty after impeding Kimi Raikkonen in qualifying

Lewis Hamilton will start the Austrian Grand Prix in fourth position after receiving a three-place grid penalty in qualifying.

The Mercedes driver had qualified second behind pole sitter Charles Leclerc, only the second time this season a Ferrari driver had taken top spot.

But the 34-year-old found himself the subject of a stewards' inquiry after Hamilton appeared to impede Alfa Romeo's Kimi Raikkonen at Turn 2.

"I tried to go straight on and get out of the way because I didn't want to meet in a corner," Hamilton said after qualifying.

"I might have put him off. That wasn't ideal."

After the session, the FIA concluded the five-time world champion had got in the way of the experienced Finn and received a three-place demotion.

That means Red Bull's Max Verstappen will line up alongside Leclerc on the front row, with Hamilton's team-mate Valtteri Bottas starting third.

However, the Briton will only drop to fourth, not fifth, following Kevin Magnussen's five-place grid penalty for changing his gearbox.

Hamilton reacted to the decision by posting on his official Instagram account, accepting he deserved to be punished and accepted "full responsibility" for his error.

"Totally deserved the penalty today and have no problem accepting it," Hamilton wrote to his 11.9 million followers.

"[It] was a mistake on my behalf and I take full responsibility for it. It wasn't intentional. Anyway, tomorrow is another day and opportunity to Rise."
