Austria to enter full lockdown and make Covid vaccines mandatory by law as Europe battles fourth wave

Austria is set to reimpose a full national lockdown in a bid to tackle a fourth wave sweeping across Europe.

Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said the restrictions will last a maximum of 20 days.

This means the lockdown should end on December 9.

He also told a news briefing that it would be a 'requirement to get vaccinated' from February 1 next year.

"We do not want a fifth wave," Mr Schallenberg said.

The lockdown comes after Covid case numbers hit record numbers in the country.

Austria also has one of the lowest vaccination levels in Europe with only around 66 per cent of nationals being fully jabbed.

A lockdown had previously been imposed solely for the unvaccinated, but it will now apply to the entire population.

Germany and Slovakia have also introduced a series of strict measures amid a rise in cases across the continent.
