Austria rocked ahead of Scotland clash as key man Marcel Sabitzer ruled out with injury

Austria will be without key playmaker Marcel Sabitzer for their clash with Scotland on Tuesday.

Steve Clarke 's team will fly out to Vienna during the week hoping to light fire under their World Cup qualification charge.

A win over Moldova didn't quite capture the nation's attention but Austria's defeat to Israel on the same day appears to have blown Group F wide open.

And if Scotland can get the better of Austria when the sides clash on Tuesday then they could finish the international break in second place and on track to qualify.

Franco Foda's team have been without Sabitzer so far as he continues to recover from a thigh injury.

The Bayern Munich playmaker is in their squad however and there had been some hopes that he would be available to help them bounce back against Scotland.

His club have now officially confirmed that he won't be rejoining the squad, however, and will instead return to Munich.

A statement read: "Marcel Sabitzer won't rejoin the Austrian national team during the current international window following his adductor injury.

"The FC Bayern medical department decided this after consultations with Austria coach Franco Foda as well as the OFB (Austrian Football Association) doctors.

"The German record champions' new signing has only been able to complete one recuperative running session since his arrival at FC Bayern.

"Sabitzer has already missed his country's matches against Moldova and Israel. The Austrians host Scotland in World Cup qualifying on Tuesday evening."

That's a major blow to Austria who will instead be leaning on the likes of Christoph Baumgartner and Marko Arnautovic to make things happen against the Scots.

Scotland, meanwhile, have some injury concerns of their own but were close to full strength against Moldova as Billy Gilmour, John McGinn and Nathan Patterson returned.

They created plenty of chances but will need to be more clinical against an Austrian team who offer a substantial step up in opposition.
