An Australian tourist has died in Nepal while trekking in a popular tourist destination.

The 63-year-old man was hiking to Tumlingtar in the small town of Lukla with a team before he died, SBS Nepali reported.

The cause of death is yet to be determined.

The region is located in north-eastern Nepal, and is popular among tourists visiting Mt Everest and the Himalayas.

A Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade spokesman confirmed the death.

"The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade is providing consular assistance to the family of an Australian man who died in Nepal," he told AAP.

"We offer our deepest condolences to his family and friends."
