Australian swimmers edge US to win 4x100 medley relay in world-record time at Rio Olympics

RIO DE JANEIRO _ Australia slammed the door on Katie Ledecky's bid to win five gold medals with a world record victory in the 4x100-meter relay at the Olympic Aquatics Center on Saturday night.

The U.S. led through 250 meters before Australia's Bronte Campbell took the lead. Her sister Cate stretched the gap, swimming against Ledecky on the anchor and touching the wall in 3 minutes, 30.65 seconds, trimming .33 off the world record Australia set at the 2014 Commonwealth Games.

The U.S. finished in 3:31.89, also breaking the Olympic record Australia set in the heats earlier Saturday.

Meanwhile, former USC swimmer Katinka Hosszu of Hungary won the Olympic Games 400-meter individual medley with a world-shattering performance.

Hosszu's 4-minute, 26.36 second clocking knocked more than two seconds off the world and Olympic record set by China's Ye Shiwen in winning in London four years ago,

Maya Di Rado of the U.S. was second in 4:31.15.
