Australian soprano Miriam Allan was one of four singers in Prince Philip's funeral choir

Newcastle born Miriam Allan singing as part of the four-person choir during Prince Philip's funeral.

An Australian singer played a key role during the funeral of Prince Philip as the royal family mourned the loss of the United Kingdom's longest-serving consort.

Australian soprano Miriam Allan was one of four choir members in St George's chapel, part of the scaled-down service broadcast live on television.

The service for the late duke had just 30 guests — because of the United Kingdom's COVID-19 restrictions — with the highest-ranking members of the royal family in attendance.

Restrictions meant the choir also had to be scaled back significantly.

St George's Chapel has dozens of singers who regularly perform during services.

But only four were allowed for the funeral on Saturday.

Three members of the choir were half of a group known as the Queen's Six — Tom Liliburn, Nick Madden and Simon Whiteley.

The Queen's Six, established in 2008, make up half of the Lay Clerks of St George's Chapel.

Lay Clerks are singers employed to sing at the cathedral. St George's Chapel has 12 Lay Clerks.

The fourth member of the choir for Prince Philip's funeral was Ms Allan, a soprano from Newcastle.

She has been based in England since 2003, and is married to Richard Bannan, another Lay Clerk of St George's Chapel.

Ms Allen has toured around the world performing in choirs and operas.

She has performed for several of the world's largest opera companies, including Opéra Comique, Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Pinchgut Opera.

The choir sang hymns during the service, as well as the national anthem.

The hymn, The Jubilate, as well as the singing of Psalm 104, were at the request of Prince Philip.
