Australian rugby star Israel Folau criticised by sport's governing body for homophobic social media posts

An Australian rugby player has been criticised by the sport’s governing body for “unacceptable” and “disrespectful” homophobic posts he made on social media.

Israel Folau posted a message on his Instagram account on Wednesday which said: "Warning. Drunks, homosexuals, adulterers, liars, fornicators, thieves, atheists, idolators. Hell awaits you. Repent! Only Jesus saves.”

The devout Christian, who plays for New South Wales Waratahs also criticised Tasmania’s decision to make gender optional on birth certificates.

He tweeted: “The devil has blinded so many people in this world, REPENT and turn away from your evil ways. Turn to Jesus Christ who will set you free.”

Last year, the star claimed he was not homophobic, despite saying God’s plan for gay people was “hell.”

He was also involved in a disagreement with the national team in 2017 for opposing same-sex marriage.

Rugby Australia responded in a statement, which read: "Rugby Australia is aware of a post made by Israel Folau on his Instagram account this afternoon.

"The content within the post is unacceptable. It does not represent the values of the sport and is disrespectful to members of the Rugby community.

"The Rugby Australia Integrity Unit has been engaged on the matter tonight."
