An Australian national arrested in Lebanon on suspicion of links to terrorist groups has been released.

The foreign minister, Julie Bishop, said the man was freed shortly after he was detained on Monday in a Lebanese army raid in Koura, near the northern city of Tripoli.

Bishop said the department of foreign affairs was seeking more details about the man and the circumstances around his arrest.

Six other Lebanese nationals were detained in the same operation, but their fate is unclear.

Lebanon’s restive northern region has become a haven for Sunni extremists and some of the estimated 1.7m refugees who have fled to the country from neighbouring Syria.

Dozens of Lebanese troops have been kidnapped or killed in clashes with the militants.
