Australian Open: Glasgow tennis ace Gordon Reid wins second consecutive Wheelchair Doubles title

Glasgow tennis ace Gordon Reid has won his second consecutive Australian Open Men's Wheelchair Doubles title - equalling a new British record in the process.

His successful defence of the title with doubles partner Alfie Hewett saw them equal the British record for most successful Grand Slam doubles partnership with Laurie and Reginald Doherty, who also won 10 titles between titles between 1897-1905.

And the pair came close to facing off in the final of the Men's Wheelchair Singles competition - which will see Hewett face off against Belgian player Joachim Gérard after he came back from a set down to defeat Reid in their semi-final match.

Reid and Hewett's victory comes just months after they secured their incredible fourth successive US Open Men's Wheelchair Doubles title back in September last year.

Alexandria-born Reid, who lives in Glasgow, was introduced to wheelchair tennis at Scotstoun Leisure Centre in the west end of the city back in 2005, after developing a rare neurological condition, transverse myelitis, in 2004.

A two-time world singles champion, he became the first British men’s wheelchair player to earn a world No. 1 senior ranking after becoming world No.1 in men’s doubles in 2015 - in the same year was named Tennis Scotland International Player of the Year alongside Andy Murray.

And at the Rio Olympic Games in 2016, Alexandria-born Reid won Gold in the Men's singles competition and silver in the Men's doubles alongside Alfie Hewett.

His talents also extend to wheelchair basketball, having previously represented Scotland as part of the under-25 team.

Gaun yersel' Gordon!
