And the World No1 was relieved to win the match 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-2 and qualify for a semi-final against Li Na. "I have played her a few times and she has beaten me once [in Stuttgart in 2008]," said Serena of her next opponent. "I know her game well and the way I feel, I have nothing to lose."

Laura Robson continued her good run of form as she eased into the quarter-finals of the girls' singles with a 6-3, 6-3 victory over Cristina Dinu. It was a dominant performance by the British youngster, who won the match in 67 minutes, winning 78% of points on her first serve and only dropping her serve once
