Australian midfielder Mark Milligan to leave Hibs in the summer

Hibs have announced that Australian midfielder Mark Milligan will depart the club this summer.

The Aussie captain arrived from Saudi Arabian outfit Al Ahli last summer and penned a two-year deal under Neil Lennon . His arrival at Easter Road was delayed slightly after visa complications.

Operating in holding midfield or the centre of defence, Milligan has made 30 appearances for Hibs this season, receiving eight yellow cards.

Despite having a year to run on his deal, it’s understood that the club have exercised a break option in the Australia captain’s contract, and he will be free to find a new club in the summer.

He joins Marvin Bartley in leaving the Hibees, the Englishman having signed a pre-contract with Premiership rivals Livingston.

Both are likely to make their final appearance in tomorrow’s final match of the Ladbrokes Premiership season at home at Aberdeen.

Manager Paul Heckingbottom praised the 33-year-old's professionalism. “Mark has been the ultimate professional since Robbie and I walked through the door, as you would expect from someone who captains his country and has featured in four World Cups.

“His experience and versatility has been important and Mark’s been a great influence on our younger players in particular.

“He couldn’t have given any more for the cause and I’d like to wish him well for the next chapter in his career.”

Milligan himself added: “I’d just like to thank everyone at Hibernian for the opportunity to play for this great club and experience Scottish football.

“I’ve really enjoyed my time here and I’m sorry it’s come to an end.

“I hope the club continues to go from strength to strength and I would like to thank all the wonderful team-mates, members of staff and supporters I’ve met along the way.”
