Australian man loses limbs after falling from train in Canada

An Australian man has undergone full and partial limb amputations after falling from a train in Canada, local media is reporting.

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) said they responded to reports of a trespasser on the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks in Revelstoke about 4:30am on Saturday (local time).

They said the 25-year-old man had serious injuries and was under the influence of alcohol but was still conscious and able to provide basic information to the officer at the scene.

Authorities said he spoke of riding the train and appeared to have fallen off and been struck by other train cars.

CTV reported the man was transported to hospital and underwent the amputations.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was aware of media reports and was seeking to provide consular assistance to an Australian man hospitalised in British Columbia.

Revelstoke is located 400 kilometres to the west of Calgary, in British Columbia.
