CHIANG MAI: A 45-year-old Australian national has been found dead inside a condominium unit in Muang district of this northern province.
Police and forensic officers from the Phu Ping station rushed to the One Plus condominium on Khan Khong Chonlaprathan Road after being alerted on Friday afternoon, Thai media reported.
The man was found lying face-down down on the floor inside the room on the eighth floor. Blood from his mouth and nose stained the floor and a foul smell filled the air.
There were no traces of a struggle inside the room and the man's belongings were left untouched. His name was not released pending notification of relatives.
A doctor and forensic officials examining the body said the man had been dead for about seven days. Several empty bottles of Thai liquor and cola were found inside the room.
A maid at the condominium noticed the foul odour coming from the room on Friday and notified the building caretaker, who opened the room and discovered the dead man.
A police investigation found that the Australian had rented the room for about one year. He stayed there alone, and no one had seen him for several days. He was said to have been a heavy drinker.
Police believed heavy drinking and lack of rest might have contributed to his death. His body was sent to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai Hospital for a post-mortem examination to establish the exact cause of death.
