Australian handed life sentence for human trafficking, rape in Philippines: reports

A court in the Philippines has reportedly found an Australian man guilty of raping and trafficking girls.

Local news outlets said Peter Gerard Scully was sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of one count of human trafficking and five counts of rape.

Scully is expected to again face court over another series of charges on June 20.

The Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade said it was providing consular assistance to an Australian man detained in the Philippines.

Scully was arrested in 2015 after allegedly sexually abusing several girls, including an 18-month-old infant.

He also allegedly strangled one of the girls, with her skeleton later discovered buried under a house he had rented.

Scully, who is from Melbourne, first moved to Cagayan de Oro on the island of Mindanao in 2011.

He allegedly ran an international paedophile ring that raped, tortured and murdered children.

It is alleged he was filming videos of the attacks and selling them online to customers around the world for up to $10,000 a view.

The Australian newspaper reported earlier this year that Australian taxpayers had funded hundreds of thousands of dollars of Scully's legal costs under a scheme for serious overseas criminal matters.
