Australian expansion of LIV Golf unlikely next year

LIV Golf's expansion in Australia appears to be on hold as its Adelaide tournament is crowned the year's best golf event.

LIV Golf hierarchy were considering adding another Australian tournament next year after its wildly successful debut in Adelaide last April.

Queensland, the home state of LIV's Australian drawcard Cameron Smith, is understood to have pitched to host a tournament.

But a preliminary 2024 schedule obtained by Sports Illustrated (SI) shows just one Australian event, in Adelaide.

The Grange course in Adelaide's west appears set to host LIV again though SI reported it was not among the three courses confirmed for next year in the preliminary schedule.

Adelaide was among 11 of the 14 LIV tournaments listed by geographic location only, the report said.

No dates were detailed in the preliminary schedule but thoughts of opening the season in Adelaide in February appear shelved, with SI reporting Mayakoba in Mexico will stage the first tournament next year.

South Australian Premier Peter Malinauskas has been assured LIV Golf will continue in Adelaide despite the Saudi-backed league's peace deal with the US PGA Tour.

Specifics of that deal, which was trumpeted as ending the golf cold war between LIV and the US PGA, have yet to be detailed.

About 77,000 spectators attended LIV's Adelaide debut tournament, which has won global award.

The Adelaide tournament has been acclaimed as the best golf event of the year by World Golf Events, part of the World Travel Awards.

"It was our first. But not our last," Malinauskas posted on Wednesday on social media platform X, formerly known as Twitter, linking the award announcement.

The annual worldwide awards are voted by golf travel and tourism industry officials, media, and the public.
