Australian cricketer sent home from Under-19 World Cup with monkey scratch

An Australian Under-19 cricketer has joined the list of peculiar sporting injuries after being sent home from the World Cup because a monkey scratched his face.

Jake Fraser-McGurk was run out without facing a ball against India yesterday and will now return home from the U19 World Cup in South Africa for treatment on his injury, which was picked up on a team outing to a nature reserve.

"I guess it serves me right for getting too close to the animal enclosure,” said the 17-year-old. “That's a lesson learned. I look forward to completing the treatment and getting back on the field as soon as possible.”

Cricket Australia’s medical team are confident Fraser-McGurk will return to action swiftly.

“We want to make sure that Jake doesn’t have any ongoing medical concerns as a result of the incident so we have taken the best course of action,” sais Alex Kountouris, sports science and sports medicine Manager at Cricket Australia.

“This involves the player returning to Australia for the treatment required within the recommended seven days of the incident taking place.

“We expect Jake will be available for selection shortly after he has completed the treatment.”
