Australian actor Julian McMahon has tragically passed away at the age of 56 after a private battle with cancer, his family has confirmed.

McMahon, who was born in Sydney, was known for his starring roles in TV series like Nip/Tuck and Charmed, as well as his portrayal of Doctor Doom in two of the Fantastic Four movies from the 2000s.

While McMahon passed away in Clearwater, Florida on July 2, news of his death was announced in a press statement issued by his wife, Kelly McMahon, earlier this morning.

“With an open heart, I wish to share with the world that my beloved husband, Julian McMahon, died peacefully this week after a valiant effort to overcome cancer,” Kelly told Deadline

“Julian loved life. He loved his family. He loved his friends. He loved his work, and he loved his fans. His deepest wish was to bring joy into as many lives as possible.”

Kelly concluded the message by asking for support to “allow our family to grieve in privacy”, adding that she and the actor’s many fans are “grateful for the memories”.

Alongside his acting credits — which included a stint on Home and Away before a move to Hollywood in the 1990s — McMahon was known as the son of Billy McMahon, who served as the Prime Minister of Australia from 1971 to 1972.

Before marrying Kelly in 2014, McMahon was previously married to Australian pop star Dannii Minogue, whom he met on the set of Home and Away

In 1999, McMahon married Baywatch star Brooke Burns, and the pair welcomed a daughter, Madison Elizabeth McMahon, the following year.

Throughout his career, McMahon earned a Golden Globe nomination for his role as Dr Christian Troy on Nip/Tuck, with his most recent credit — portraying fictional Australian Prime Minister Stephen Roos in The Residence — landing on Netflix in March of this year.

McMahon’s role of Doctor Doom is set to be reprised by fellow actor Robert Downey Jr. in Marvel’s upcoming film, Avengers: Doomsday.
