Australia wins first Test in Perth after NZ's resistance finally crumbles

Australia has taken a burst of wickets late in the day to seal a comprehensive victory over New Zealand in Perth to take a 1-0 series lead.

Just as it looked like the visitors would linger long enough to force a fifth day, the dam broke after the final drinks break, with five wickets falling in the final hour to hand Australia a 296-run victory.

Chasing 468 for victory, New Zealand's primary aim was always going to be survival, but they couldn't quite last the day, with Starc (4-45) once again the primary destroyer, and Lyon (4-63) also getting among the wickets.

The rot started six overs in when Starc procured extra bounce off the widening cracks in the pitch, nipping up at opener Jeet Raval (1) to force an easy catch at point.

Lyon got the prized wicket of Kane Williamson (14) with some sharp turn as the star batsman gloved his defensive shot straight to Matthew Wade at short leg.

Starc then removed the other danger man in Ross Taylor (22) with a bottom-edge off a pull shot through to the keeper, before Lyon struck an over later, dismissing opener Tom Latham LBW for 18.

Henry Nicholls hung around a bit before he fell to a mix of bad luck and fielding brilliance. Lyon's delivery beat the bat initially and cannoned off his pad, only for the ball to bounce back and nick the bat on its way to the diving Travis Head, who took an excellent catch at silly mid-off with his outstretched fingers down low.

The partnership between BJ Watling and Colin de Grandhomme frustrated Australia, particularly when Lyon and Tim Paine appealed for a caught behind after hearing an edge off Watling's bat.

The umpire was unmoved, and Paine decided against a review, only for a HotSpot replay to show there was a faint edge on Watling's willow.

Then Steve Smith of all people dropped Watling at slip, who attempted a one-handed catch but could not hold on to a ball that flew off the edge.

Watling and De Grandhomme frustrated the Australian attack for an hour after tea, but Pat Cummins broke the partnership once night had fallen, finding the edge of De Grandhomme's bat, with Smith snaffling the catch at first slip.

From there the wickets tumbled, with Starc finding a faint edge down the leg side to remove Watling, and Cummins bouncing out Mitchell Santner.

Neil Wagner came in for some fiery treatment from the Australian quicks during his short stay at the crease, before edging to Paine behind the stumps.

The injured Lockie Ferguson bravely came out to face the music, but it didn't make much difference in the end, with Southee edging to Smith off the bowling of Lyon to end proceedings.

Australia had started the day resuming its second innings and Cummins (13) was the first to fall on day four when he feathered a glance to the keeper off Neil Wagner's bowling, before Matthew Wade (17) pulled De Grandhomme to the man at midwicket.

Starc lashed out with the bat for a quickfire 23 before top-edging to third man, as Australia declared on 9-217, sparing the injured Josh Hazlewood from coming out into the middle, setting New Zealand a daunting target.

The series moves to Melbourne for the Boxing Day Test as the long-form game takes a mini break for Big Bash cricket, before the third Test is played in Sydney in the New Year.
