Australia vs England
2019 Cricket World Cup semi-final
Venue: Edgbaston
Date: Thursday, July 11, 2019
Start: 10:30am BST
Host nation England will be looking to reach their first Cricket World Cup final since 1992 when they take on defending champions Australia at Edgbaston on Thursday.
After a scare midway through the group stage, pre-tournament favourites England won their final two fixtures against India and New Zealand to reach the last four, reclaiming their world number one ranking spot in the process.
Australia have been in superb form during the tournament, but suffered a surprise defeat to South Africa on the final day of the round-robin phase to surrender top spot to India and set up this clash, rather than a potentially easier tie against New Zealand.
The Aussies were dominant winners when the two side's met at Lord's just two weeks ago, but England's form has improved dramatically since, boosted by the return of opening batsman Jason Roy after a hamstring injury.
Predicted line-ups
Australia XI: Warner, Finch, Smith, Wade, Handscomb, Maxwell, Carey, Cummins, Starc, Beherndorff, Lyon
England XI: Bairstow, Roy, Root, Morgan, Stokes, Buttler, Woakes, Plunkett, Rashid, Archer, Wood
Result prediction: England win
A week or two ago, it felt like all the momentum was with Australia but a combination of injuries, the South Africa defeat and England's return to form has tilted the balance.
Australia's big game experience could be key, but perhaps less so than if these two were meeting in a final, and the Edgbaston factor is huge, with England having one ten in a row in all formats at the Birmingham ground that produces this country's most partizan atmosphere.
