Australia to support Iran inquiry: Wong

Foreign Minister Penny Wong has backed a "prompt, independent investigation" into the death of a young Iranian woman in custody.

Mahsa Amini's death two weeks ago has sparked anti-government demonstrations across Iran, with protesters calling for the end of the Islamic clerical establishment.

Demonstrations have taken place in more than 80 cities since the death of the 22-year-old in mid-September after she was arrested for "unsuitable attire" by the morality police enforcing the state's strict dress code.

In a statement on Twitter, Senator Wong supported the UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres' call for an "impartial and effective investigation" by an "independent, competent authority".

"Australia supports a prompt, independent investigation into Mahsa Amini's death," she wrote on Thursday.

"Those responsible must be held to account.

"We stand with Iranian women and girls in their struggle for equality."

Mr Guterres said human rights, including freedom of expression, peaceful assembly and association, should be respected.

Iran's state media has said 41 people, including members of the police and a pro-government militia, have died during the protests.

But Iranian human rights groups have reported a higher number of deaths.
