Australia thrash New Zealand by 279 runs to complete series sweep

Australia completed a record-breaking home summer with another crushing victory over New Zealand in Sydney.

Australia have won all five of this summer’s home Tests inside four days, with Pakistan and then New Zealand repeatedly drubbed.

New Zealand have been broken by injury and illness and went down by 279 runs in the final Test of the series to lose 3-0.

David Warner smashed a swift century and first innings double-centurion Marnus Labuschagne passed 50 for the 11th time in nine Tests as Australia declared their second innings on 217 for two.

There was a moment of controversy when that pair were docked five runs for running on the pitch by umpire Aleem Dar.

New Zealand were then reduced to 27 for four by tea, and Nathan Lyon ripped through for his second five-wicket haul of the match as the tourists crumbled to 127 all out.

New Zealand have won just one of their last 31 matches against Australia, who pick up the maximum 240 points for the World Test Championship from their home summer.
