Australia star Glenn Maxwell suffers freak broken leg at party ruling him out of England games

Australia star Glenn Maxwell has suffered a freak broken leg at a party which will rule him out of his nation's upcoming One Day Internationals against old rivals England. Maxwell will miss the series - that kicks off next week - after breaking his left fibula.

Maxwell was partying with friends when he and a fellow pal found themselves in an unfortunate tangle when running across a tennis court. The pair both fell to the ground, with Maxwell's leg trapped under the other man causing the break.

The all-rounder's injury came just days after Australia were eliminated from the T20 World Cup, where Maxwell scored 118 runs at an average 39.33 across four games.

The 34-year-old is now set for a lengthy time on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on his injury on Sunday. Maxwell's injury and forthcoming absence was confirmed by Cricket Australia, and chief selector George Bailey.

Bailey said: "Glenn is in good spirits. It was an unfortunate accident and we feel for Glenn in the circumstances given he was in great touch in his last few games. Glenn is a critical part of our white ball structure and we will continue to support him through his recovery and rehabilitation."

Following his international duties, Maxwell was set to captain Melbourne Stars in the upcoming 2023 Big Bash League. As well as his white-ball efforts, the Aussie star's red ball hopes have also taken a blow. Speaking to cricket.com.au Maxwell recently revealed his intentions to get himself back in and around his nation's Test setup, but his injury will now have done him no favours.

He said: "It's something that I've made no secret about, that I really want to play Test cricket again and I'm just hoping by the end of the summer hopefully I can be somewhere around that Test squad." Maxwell has endured a tough five-year a hiatus away from Australia's Test team, with his last red ball appearance coming in September 2017 against Bangladesh.
