The Australian equivalent of the BBC has produced a documentary looking at the issues of Welsh independence.
Called "Waking the Red Dragon" the documentary is part of the Foreign Correspondent series produced by the Australian Broadcasting Cooperation (ABC).
The doc aired at the end of March but is still available. Within the piece they look at how issues like poverty and Brexit have driven the growth of the Welsh independence movement since 2016. An advert for the doc, which is hosted by Nicholas Dole, said: "They were promised a better Britain. The Welsh are rising. A new independence movement is gaining ground."
It then shows Cardiff University professor Laura McAllister talking about how young people in particular are far more likely to identify as Welsh rather than British.
Support for Welsh independence had indeed grown sharply since 2016, however poll for WalesOnline on St David's Day showed that people who support an independent Wales had actually fallen to its lowest levels since the pandemic.
However the cause of the drop in independence does not appear to be a significant increase in support for staying the union. The YouGov poll shows the percentage of people saying they would vote to stay in the UK is fairly flat at 55%. In contrast the change seems to be driven by an increasing number of people saying they don't know how they would vote, which has risen to 16%. Just 4% wouldn't say.
This chart shows how support for independence has appeared to wane in the most recent year but remains well above levels seen a decade ago
The CEO of YesCymru has said that the latest polling on Welsh Independence must be a ‘wake up call’ for the wider movement in Wales.
